Q2) Explain the Functionality of EMS, PMS, CAS, GDS, and CRS

Energy Management Systems (EMS)

An Energy Management Systems (EMS) is a hotel system of computer-aided tools to monitor and measure electrical building loads so to control hotel appliances and reduce energy consumption. It helps hotels reach their consumption targets and provide them with optimal consumption levels. This system is able to control all the hotel room appliances including lights; air conditioning; TV etc., and integrates them with all other building functions. It overrules the settings chosen by guests once they leave a room and reset them once the guest re-enters the room. Its use of intelligent control sensors to discreetly monitor guest room occupation and switch power accordingly helps the hotel avoid energy waste, resulting in a number of benefits such as reduced maintenance costs and electricity bill savings.

Property Management Systems (PMS)

Property Management Systems (PMS) is a comprehensive software application which helps hotels automate various hotel functions such as guest bookings, accounts receivable, sales and marketing, food and beverage costing, materials and maintenance management, HR and payroll etc.. It interfaces with the central reservation systems and revenue systems, and is the center of information processing. With such system, hotels can better manage their business from an operational perspective in terms of front and back office activities.

Call Accounting Systems (CAS)

Call Accounting Systems (CAS) is a computer based or stand-alone system that monitors all outgoing calls while presenting the information such as numbers dialed, from which extension, call duration, and call cost. This can help hotels efficiently track guest room phone charges and hence aid hotels to generate revenue from calls made by guests.

Global Distribution System (GDS)
Global Distribution System (GDS) is an international computer reservation system which can access many hotel databases in different countries. They are often used by hotels to distribute reservation and information services to sales outlets around the world. Its functionality is to be a computerized platform representing a single point of access for a wide range of reservations from airline tickets to hotel rooms.

Central Reservation System (CRS)

Central Reservation System (CRS) is a computerized system that stores and distributes information of a hotel, which acts as a tool to reach the global distribution system as well as internet distribution systems from one single system. It assists hotel managers in managing their online marketing and sales, allowing them to upload their rates and availabilities in real time to be seen by sales channels that are also using the same system. This helps maximize hotel revenues by managing inventory across all distribution channels.

After researching on the above five hotel systems, I have a much clearer idea of their functions as well as how important they are to facilitate the daily operations of hotels.
