Government-Sponsored Recreation in Hong Kong
Government-sponsored recreations are
mostly managed by Leisure and Cultural Service Department (LCSD) in Hong Kong. The public can book recreations through online system, leisure link self-service kiosks, telephone or book the facility personally at booking counter of different leisure venues. They can enjoy those facilities by paying a relatively low fee. There
are many categories under government-sponsored recreations such as aquatics
facilities, holiday camp, land sport facilities, libraries, museums,
performance venues, parks, zoos, gardens, etc. Apart from common recreations we
always use, the LCSD actually also provides some special recreational
facilities.
Model Car Play Area
LCSD has opened model car play area which operate
from 9a.m. to 10:30pm at Jordan Valley Park in Kwun Tong since 2010. Two
circuits with the area of 1800m2 and 180m2 are provided in
the area respectively. Public may enjoy drive their model car at driver stand and
watching model car race at the covered spectator stand. There are even covered
pit area for maintenance of model car before, during or after the race. There is
a fee-charging car park with 42 parking spaces nearby. Here is the news introducing
the Model Car Play Area and public comments on the facility:
Beach Volleyball Courts
Apart
from playing beach volleyball at beaches such as Silver Mine Bay Beach and
Repulse Bay Beach in Hong Kong, the public can play beach volleyball in urban
area as well. LCSD has opened several beach volleyball court in urban areas like
Wong Tai Sin, Kwai Tsing, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long. Stands, spotlight
and broadcasting system are provided in court to support the need of holding beach
volleyball race. There are even lockers and shower room for beach volleyball
player to change clothes and clean up after exercising. Some users comment on
the beach volleyball courts provided by LCSR in the following video.
Horse Riding School
LCSD has two public riding schools managed by
The Hong Kong Jockey Club in Tuen Mun and Lei Tue Mun. The schools mainly
provide equestrian activities like group training classes, horse lessons, pony
lessons, visits, competitions, taking a horse as livery, etc. Horse riding fun days are held from time to
time in a year for the public to have a trial for riding pony or horse which
charges from $25 to $75.
Model Boat Pools
Model Boat Pools are also built
inside some parks in Hong Kong. There are 6 of them in Sai Kung, Tai Po, Tuen Mun,
Yuen Long, Wan Chai and Chai Wan. Model boat lovers will stay together to share
their experience of making and playing model boat at weekend in this location.
No fees are charged for playing model boat in those pools. Here is a video
which shows people play model boat at Tin Shui Wai Park.
Road Safety Town
Road Safety Town is educational
recreation which simulates road environment to enhance children’s awareness of
food safety. There are 4 of them located in Pak Fuk, Shatin, Sau Mau Ping and
Tuen Mun respectively. It provides interesting and interactive visiting which
includes a tricycle trip, teaching about using footbridge and pedestrian subway,
crossing zebra line and following road user’s code for primary and kindergarten
students to learn more about road safety. Police officer will also give lecture
about the importance of road safety in the town. Schools or organizations may arrange
booking for visiting and bring students to Road Safety Town for outdoor
learning. Below is a video which display more details about what children will
learning the visiting.
Evaluation:
Through doing this research, I realize that the variety of government-sponsored recreation is much higher than what I have known. There are many special and fun facilities provided by LCSD besides from those we always mentioned and enjoy our leisure time. It would be great if public can try out different sports and play in different recreational facilities in Hong Kong.
