Q1) Describe More Recent Trends and New Development in Tourism

Nowadays, more people go travelling around when they have leisure time. Especially for Chinese, travelling is number 1 leisure pursuit for them. There are certain trends we would like to address in the followings, they are ‘Bleisure trip’, ‘Adventure trip’, and ‘Multi-generational trip’.

Bleisure Trip

‘Bleisure’ is a mix of ‘Business’ and ‘Leisure’. People will add extra days in their business trips so that they can travel around to gain more experiences. According to The Bleisure Report 2014 by BridgeStreet Global Hospitality, there are 83% of respondents use time on business trip to explore around where they are visiting. Also, 60% of respondents have taken bleisure trips with 30% respondents are adding two vacation days to business trips. Thus, 46% of the respondents add personal travel days to business travel ‘every trip’ or to ‘most trips’. It shows that people nowadays will tend to explore more not just during their vacation, but also during their business trip after the work has done.

What will they do when they are on the Bleisure trip? Apart from the work they need to finish, they will go around the city to gain more experiences and explore more. According to The Bleisure Report 2014 by BridgeStreet Global Hospitality, the most popular bleisure activities are sightseeing, dining, and arts/culture.

We believe that it would become a popular trend for the next generation to explore the world during business trip in the future. According to The Bleisure Report 2014 by BridgeStreet Global Hospitality, 94% of younger travelers are ‘more than’ or ‘equally’ likely to take a bleisure trip in the next five years, which is significantly higher than the worldwide average. We can see that, this will be one of the new trends in tourism to let people explore the world, to gain more cultural experiences.

Adventure Trip

According the Adventure Tourism Market Study 2013, in 2012, 42% of travelers reported an adventure activity as the main activity of their last trip. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), there are two types of adventure travel, soft adventure travel and hard adventure travel. Examples for hard adventure are mountain biking and kayaking, and examples for soft adventure are camping and biking. According to the OTAGO Polytechnic, soft adventure travel is the most popular in adventure travel. The reasons why soft adventure travel is the most popular because those activities in this area requires less physical output, spend shorter time to do the activities. Also, it provides wider range of budgets in joining different activities in this area and usually includes cultural aspect in their activities. Even in Hong Kong, there are some websites organizing adventure travels. For example, cheese tasting, junk boat party, hiking, kayaking and rock climbing. Budgets vary from different activities or sports people joined.

Nowadays, the goal for people to travel is to explore the world, to contact with local people to gain more cultural and local experiences. According to the Adventure Tourism Market Study 2013, 54% of travelers plan to participate in an adventure activity on their next trip which increase in interest comes largely from soft adventure activities. It shows that in the future, adventure travel will be a popular trend in the future as this is one way to contact with local people to gain local and cultural experiences, especially soft adventure trip.

Multi-generational Trip

According to The Bleisure Report 2014 by BridgeStreet Global Hospitality, there are 54% of respondents will take their family with them during the business trip. So, they can go out to explore the culture in that place and relax with their family. We believe that this will become a trend in the future as people tend to go travel with family more. Take an example, family may go to river cruise for multi-generational trip to reconnect with each other, especially those families that members are geographically separated. Also, multi-sports travel is one the way for generations to go travelling. We can see that, there are different ways for families to go travelling together to reconnect and explore the world.

We believe multi-generational trip will be one of the popular trend in tourism soon. According to a recent AAA (American Automobile Association) survey, more than 36% of respondents are planning to take a multi-generational trip in the next 12 months, which is 4% higher than the statistics from last year. Based on the increase, we believe it will much more common than nowadays.

Evaluation:

Before having the lecture and doing the research, I have never thought that there are many trends in Tourism. I only thought that free independent travelling is the main trends before and even now. After lecture, I found that technology is applied to this business, such as automatic airport check-in and the ticketless air travel, which I have never thought that they are becoming more popular these days. Also, after doing the research, I found that there are many trends I did not know and tried before. In the future, we may wanna try these to experience the local culture.

Conclusion:

There are many other trends in tourism not yet been described in this passage. We believe these will be more popular in the coming future. People will have such a travel to explore the culture and gain cultural experiences, which is one of the goals people go travelling recently. We hope you enjoy this reading and find the one travel type that suits you the most.
